Only the un-split, leathery hide known as Gewil (or "Gevil" to many) used in our Torah Scrolls removes all doubts on CRITICAL legal issues addressed in the Babylonian Talmud -- according to ALL opinions, while reconciling the Rambam and Tosafot. Gewil is now used by almost every type of observant Jew on the planet. From the former Sepharadi Chief Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu to many Ashkenazi authorities (of all different flavors), people are thirsting to return to a material that reconciles all legal doubts, according to all observant perspectives. Talmud Bava Batra 14b mentions that Moses used Gewil for the Torah scroll he placed into the holy ark. Also, in Gitten 54b, we find a mention that Torah scrolls were written on Gewil.

WHICH LAYER TO USE: Arguments about which layer of the split-hide to write upon are totally avoided.

TALMUDIC "IBUD": Only Gewil utilizes the ancient "'Ibud ha-'or" (leather preparation) process, mentioned as a LEGAL REQUIRMENT by the Talmud, which is still utilized by only a few hideprocessors today. The full-hide is what made the scrolls at Qumron (lehavdil) so strong.

Gewil was known throughout the entire Mizrahhi, Sefaradi and Yemenite world as the original Torah Scroll.

Unfortunately, most of the processes used by most other sofrim (scribes) today (ie: the way in which the leather is cleaned and turned into parchment) may not be good enough in the eyes of the Talmud, since most their "processing" is done with only lime (i.e.: withoutm'afasim).
